It happened rather quickly, but the holidays are upon us. Christmas music fills the air, the leaves have fallen, snow is beginning to dust the ground, shopping for gifts and presents has begun, and the end of another year is upon us.
We know you won’t forget you need to get your home ready, and here are five things you can do to get your home ready for the holidays, which will help ward off any unwanted comments from the in-laws.
1. Get your Grocery Shopping Done Early
Gearing up for this holiday season it’s best to be prepared and ahead of the game, plan your holiday dinner menu, and head to the grocery store early. That way you’ll have nothing to worry about other than your kids sneaking snacks from the pantry. While eating these delicious meals, a spill is bound to happen because let’s get real, we are human. To protect your freshly cleaned floors, make sure you have a TruRinse Spotter Bottle on hand this holiday season so you can have a meal that welcomes spills instead of stress.
2. Deep Clean Visible Places You Haven’t For a While
Let’s face it, we are all guilty of not cleaning every nook and cranny of our homes. To make up for lost time, start by dusting all of the decor in your house. Over the year(s), dust collects on all of your cute decor, grab a damp microfiber cloth and wipe off all of the things that make your house a home.
Secondly, grab your vacuum and vacuum up and down all of the curtains. If the fabric is washing-machine safe, take them off the rod and wash them on a delicate cycle. Once they come out of the washing machine, air dry them and they will look brand new–plus your house will smell amazing!!!
Third, grab your broom (so you don’t break your back), attach a damp microfiber cloth to the end with some rubber bands, and wipe your baseboards down. Having clean carpets and dirty baseboards is like having clean hands and dirty fingernails. Remember that it is best to dust your baseboards after your carpet cleaning, so give those baseboards a little facelift and let us take care of the rest.
Lastly, it’s time to clean your light fixtures. They spend the year sitting and collecting dust, and they’re the last thing we typically think of cleaning. Take off any light fixtures that are removable and place them in lukewarm water with some dish soap. Let those soak for about an hour.
For the non-removable light fixtures, wipe the dust and gunk off with a damp microfiber towel. Bonus hack, replace all burnt-out lightbulbs while the covers are soaking in the sink. Once everything is wiped off, grab the light fixtures that have been soaking, rinse them off, hand dry, and put them back, so your house will shine bright this holiday season.
BONUS** Don’t forget to clean the oven hood if you have one. Or on top of the fridge if you have really tall relatives.
3. Carpet Cleaning & Tile & Grout Cleaning
Throughout the year our poor floors take quite a beating. Our floors are the first thing our feet touch in the morning and the last thing they touch before we go to bed each night. The kids and pets come and go and bring dirt and grime with them, work boots hit the floor, and spills and pet accidents happen.
These are all unavoidable situations. Gearing up for this holiday season, get your tile and carpet professionally cleaned. Nothing is better than stepping on fresh clean carpets and watching your tile sparkle like new again.
4. It’s Time To Wash Sheets & Bedding
The holiday season is full of expected and unexpected visitors that often need a place to stay for the holidays. To help prepare, wash all of the regular bedding, and make sure any extra bedding is washed and available for use. You never know who will have to sleep on those freshly cleaned carpets.
For added freshness after throwing your sheets in the washer, go through and dust your mattresses with baking soda and let it sit while your bedding is being cleaned. Once your wash is complete vacuum up all of the baking soda. Throw the rest of your stuff in the dryer, and once your fitted sheet is dry, make your bed and everything will smell amazing and fresh.
5. Don’t Forget the Decorations
The holidays don’t quite feel like the holidays without the appropriate decor! Now that your house is in tip-top condition, head down to your basement, pull out the holiday decor you love and place it in your freshly cleaned home to create a festive, holiday atmosphere. Don’t forget to pull out your tree skirt to keep pesky pine needles from falling on your carpets!
Also, this is the perfect time to get your spouse to help you because you can remind them how much work you have been doing to get the house ready!
